An
American librarian's visit to Cambodia
| |
 | Susan Besemer received a short term grant through the Fulbright grant through
|
 | She was sent to the Kingdom of Cambodia for six weeks in the
summer of 2004.
|
 | Cambodia has profound needs, and many individuals and
organizations are helping the Cambodian people strengthen and develop
their country. Sue wanted to help in an area where she thought
that she could make a difference, librarianship.
|
 | The grant was to teach library management and to help colleagues
there, led by Dr. Prom Tevy, Department Head of the library, develop
the library of the Royal Academy of Cambodia. |
|
 | Like most libraries in Cambodia, the RAC library has no book
budget. While the library collection is built on generous donations
from various sources, no basic reference books are available in the
RAC library. No encyclopedias, no atlases, no comprehensive
dictionaries. The library especially needs books in the areas of Khmer
studies, Southeast Asian philosophy, medicine, and political science.
Books in library science are important, as well, since there is no
school of librarianship in Cambodia. |
